Lend Your Support

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, more specifically November 14th is World Diabetes Day.  The blue circle that you see here is the logo for the World DIabetes Day campaign.  This organization is focused on the worldwide “education and prevention” of diabetes.

In the spirit of World Diabetes Day, I like to think of November as a chance to continue the good work that we have done for the JDRF’s ‘Walk to Cure Diabetes’.  So just because the walk is over doesn’t mean that we are done yet.

When you make a donation to the JDRF you are making a 100% tax deductible contribution to an organization whose focus is finding a cure for Arden, being her voice in Washington and developing devices that will lengthen, save or enrich her life.  The JDRF is a well led and lean charity machine.  An impressive 80% of every dollar that you give goes directly to their endeavors.

So that’s my pitch, if you find yourself looking for a charitable donation to make as tax season approaches, I truly hope that you’ll consider making a donation to the JDRF through Arden’s walk.

Arden’s 2010 walk has collected $5,600 so far.  In the five years that we have been supporting the JDRF, Arden has raised an incredible $40,000!  We’ve reached that number 5, 10 and 50 dollars at a time through the generosity of people just like you.  Though our team total was $5,600, we fell short of Arden’s personal goal of $5,000.  Perhaps you’d be able to help her get a little closer to that goal.  If you can, please use this link to make a donation. Thank you!

2010 JDRF Walk Wrap Up

Our fifth walk is in the books and it was a great success! There were fifteen of us that walked together on Sunday, the weather was great and the company sublime.  I want to take this moment to thank everyone that supported Arden’s walk.

As a team we’ve raised over $5,500!  Friends like Tami, Aly and Megan went to work asking their friends and family for support while Dan took to FaceBook to collect over $1,400 which he added to the $1,700 that his JDRF bowling fundraiser brought in last year.  Add that to the $2,000+ you all kicked in... just fantastic!

I spoke to many walk teams yesterday and they almost all reported a drastic decline in donations over the last few years with this year being the worst.  I am so proud to say that while we experienced a decline, I was told that we were one of only a few teams at the Bucks County site to raise over $5,000. I’m very, very proud of that and of all of you. You are all to be commended.

I was asked to make a small announcement before the walk began and as I was sharing my story about the support that is available to the parents of type I kids online via Twitter, I found myself getting a bit choked up.  To be fair the entire event is an exercise in not feeling alone and quite emotional if you are effected by type I.  I looked around at the brothers, aunts, mothers and sons in the faceless crowd and was calmed by the knowledge that they all understand what Arden’s Day is like.  I spoke to a man whose son was diagnosed just a month before the walk, the little boy was just three years old.  I could see myself in his face as he described what the last month had been like.  I saw his fear and sadness but worse I saw that he doesn’t yet understand what’s about to happen to his family.  I smiled, wished him well and told him that everything was going to be fine.  What I didn’t tell him is that everything was going to be ‘diabetes fine’, not fine like he was accustomed to in the past.
So that’s it. Another walk in the books... I hope it’s the last one they ever have to have.  I have to go check Arden’s BG now... good night!
You know what? I should say that it’s not too late to make a donation... You can do it at the link. Thanks again!

Sunday is walk day

Arden’s 2010 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes is this Sunday, October 24th at the Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA. Walk registration begins at 9am, the walk starts promptly at 10am.  I’ve been asked to make a short announcement before the walk about the benefits of social media. So if you arrive early enough you’ll get to see me rock the mic. ;)

This year marks Arden’s 5th walk.  Since we’ve been at this for so long we tried to stay a little low-profile this year because we thought that some of the supporters may need a break.  With that in mind we won’t have any custom t-shirts for you but the JDRF does provide a shirt that I’ll be wearing and I hope you will be too.  It would be great if everyone that is planning to come would take a moment to send an email, I’ll send you a note back complete with my cell number so we can coordinate that morning.  The weather for Sunday according to weather.com will be 66º and sunny - perfect!  If you need directions please refer to the map below or give me a call.

Proud to pod

Pick up today’s Trentonian to read all about Arden.  Great thanks to Sulaiman, the writer of the piece for all of the time and attention that he gave to our story.

The article is also online at this link.  If you like it, please take a moment to hit the FaceBook like button, ReTweet on Twitter or comment on the article at the Trentonian site, below at Arden’s Day - or do them all!

I can’t say enough great things about the Arden’s OmniPod, the freedom that it’s tubeless design gives to her or my experience with their customer service.  I don’t make statements like this on the site very often but, “If you or your child is in need of an insulin pump, you just must give the OmniPod a long look”.  You’ll be happy you did!

Lots of people are sharing the link on FaceBook today, thank you to all of you for being such wonderful supporters! Remember, it’s all about transparency and raising awareness.  Your support and help spreading the word makes Arden’s message that much stronger.  Have a great day!  One day when a cure is found, you will all have a place in saying, “I helped to cure type I diabetes”, I just know it...

Way to go Arden!  What a little star you have :)  Thanks so much for all your advocating .. it's hard to believe I was in her shoes once at 6 years old (minus the pod of course).  Things were so different then and I love seeing parents like you getting the word out there now.  It makes all the difference!
